Kaufer Nationally Recognized as Legislative Mental Health Champion
HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) was honored Tuesday as a legislative mental health champion in recognition of his outstanding work on mental health issues at Mental Health America’s Regional Policy Council Legislator Awards Breakfast in Boston, Massachusetts, which was held in conjunction with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) legislative summit.
“I am truly honored and humbled to be selected for this prestigious, national award,” Kaufer said. “We must continue our fight to turn policy into action and to give a voice to those who sometimes cannot provide a voice for themselves.”
Kaufer was one of five legislators selected to receive this award due to his heavy involvement and dedication to the opioid and heroin epidemic in Pennsylvania. Kaufer currently serves as a co-chair of the PA-HOPE (PA Heroin, Opioid, Prevention and Education) Caucus and as the subcommittee chairman of Drugs and Alcohol for the House Human Services Committee.
He is also the current sponsor of 10 bills in the House, which seek to address PA’s opioid crisis by empowering communities across the state through developing strategies for educators, hospitals, law enforcement officers, counselors and families to confront the epidemic.
