Luzerne County Legislators Announces Nearly $23 Million in LSA Funding for 2019-20 Projects
HARRISBURG – In a continued effort to support economic development and projects to improve the quality of life for citizens throughout Luzerne County, Reps. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna/Luzerne/Wyoming), Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) and Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) along with Sens. Lisa Baker (R-Luzerne/Pike/Susquehanna/Wayne/Wyoming), John Gordner (R-Columbia/Luzerne/Montour/Northumberland/Snyder) and John Yudichak (I-Carbon/Luzerne) announced today the funding of 2019 and 2020 Local Share Account (LSA) projects totaling nearly $23 million.

The legislators explained that these funds provided for through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) as approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) offer ways for Luzerne County and its citizens to improve the community. As required under Act 71, the Gaming Act, the LSA program is administered by DCED and was established for the purpose of distributing 2% of gross terminal revenues of certain licensed gaming facilities.
“I am glad to see that these two years’ worth of projects are being funded throughout Luzerne County by the Commonwealth Financing Authority,” said Boback. “I am always happy to advocate in Harrisburg for funding that will provide for projects that will see upgrades and improvements to our municipalities and continue to benefit and strengthen our community.”
“I was happy to join with my House and Senate colleagues in securing funding for these important projects and purchases throughout Luzerne County. From public safety to the arts to infrastructure, these grants are going toward worthwhile improvements that will help to enhance the quality of life in communities large and small,” said Toohil. “I am especially pleased we are able to continue the decade-long effort to revitalize downtown Hazleton through renovation grants for the J.J. Ferrara Center, YWCA and historic City Hall. Sugarloaf Township was also allotted money to complete its new police station, which will allow the department to function more effectively and efficiently.”
“Investments in our communities are especially critical now that we are rebounding from the pandemic,” said Kaufer. “I am pleased that these projects can finally move forward to benefit people from across Luzerne County.”
“This funding allows communities to proceed with projects that contribute to an improved quality of life,” said Baker. “Whether they impact jobs, safety, recreation or learning, these efforts are part of the infrastructure that makes communities and neighborhoods stronger and more desirable places to live and work. The grants will have a positive impact across our region, as we work together to rebuild our economy following the challenges of the pandemic restrictions.”
