A package of bills designed to redevelop Pennsylvania’s infrastructure, boost economic growth, and provide family sustaining jobs known as “Energize PA” was the topic of a press conference held on Wednesday in Harrisburg. Lawmakers were joined by natural gas workers as well as business advocates to support legislative measures that would revitalize brown field sites and take advantage of abundant natural resources available in Pennsylvania.

As more and more Pennsylvanians turn to solar energy to power their homes, a bi-partisan group of lawmakers introduced legislation this week to allow for community solar projects in the Commonwealth. Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) is the prime sponsor of a bill that would allow Pennsylvania property owners and renters, who are interested in relying on solar power, to have the option to join their neighbors in creating community solar projects and to receive credit on their electricity bill for the power that is produced.

The Fiscal Year 2018-19 General Appropriation bill (House Bill 2121) is on its way to the state Senate for consideration after the House of Representatives passed it Thursday by a vote of 188-10. The $32.7 billion spending plan increases growth by 1.7 percent, which is below the rate of inflation (2.13 percent), requires no additional taxes or revenues and officially erases a deficit. The budget also includes a record high $12.3 billion investment in education from pre-k through 12th grade, with additional increases in funding for career and technical education as well as higher education. The budget bill is expected to be sent to the governor prior to June 30, after anticipated Senate passage.

House Republican lawmakers called for action on legislation to help contain costs and bring real reform to Pennsylvania’s welfare system. Reps. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) and Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Dauphin) announced a package of bills Tuesday in Harrisburg to give more Pennsylvania families an opportunity to improve their quality of life, while tackling waste, fraud and abuse from within the current benefit system. The package also contains measures aimed at enhancing the value of work and strong families, while recognizing that those receiving benefits need help to gain financial independence, not continue a life of dependence. Advocates who are opposed to the consolidation of state social service agencies, including the state Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, into a larger state bureaucracy rallied in the state Capitol Wednesday. Public testimony was heard about budget related agency consolidation proposals and questions were raised about the future status of specific state programs, the effects on customer service and how consolidation could limit input from populations served by as many as four state agencies. State lawmakers joined in the show of support for the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs and how it has played a positive role in helping many citizens to recover from opioid drug addiction. Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) offered comments on this issue.
