HARRISBURG – Three boroughs in the 120th Legislative District were named as recipients of $1.2 million in grants to improve transportation and pedestrian mobility, Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) announced today.

The funding is through the Multimodal Transportation Fund, which provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents. The following boroughs in Kaufer’s district were awarded grant funding:

• Forty Fort Borough was awarded $600,000 for a pedestrian/bike trail to connect with the existing levee trail that ends on Church Street in Kingston to the Luzerne County Levee Trail adjacent to River Street in Forty Fort. The first phase of the project will see the construction the trail from Church Street to East Turner Street in Forty Fort.
• Luzerne Borough was awarded $100,000 to start a plan to improve its sidewalks and streetscape. Under the project, 26,900 square-feet of sidewalk pavers, 14 crosswalks, 40 directional signs, 60 street lamps and 40 trees will be installed in the area of Main and Turner streets.
• Swoyersville Borough will receive a $500,000 to mill and repave 13 streets that need refurbishment. In addition, Americans with Disability Act-compliant curb ramps will be installed and crosswalk marking reapplied after paving.

“These projects will increase safety for pedestrian and vehicular traffic and will improve the overall wellbeing of residents in the community,” Kaufer said. “I am excited to see these projects coming to fruition and appreciate the financial assist the state is lending.”
