LUZERNE – Honoring area veterans who served this nation, Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) will be hosting a Veterans Recognition and Legislative Brunch on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Black Diamond American Legion, Post 395,
386 Wyoming Ave., Kingston.
“Our veterans have dedicated their lives to defending our country to ensure that our rights of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness remain intact,” said Kaufer. “While we will remain forever indebted to their sacrifice, we wanted to show our gratitude and appreciation to those in our community who served this nation with great pride.”
The guest speaker for the event will be Col. Patrick Monahan, commander of the 166th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap. He served overseas in Bosnia Herzegovina and during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Spartan Shield.
Advance reservations are required and seating is limited. Reservations can be made by calling Kaufer’s district office at 570-283-1001 or going online to
RepKaufer.com. The deadline to register for the event is Friday, Sept. 13.
Kaufer said the recognition event builds on the American Legion’s recent success in advocating for passage of the federal Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service (LEGION) Act, which extends eligibility criteria for membership in the American Legion. Veterans who served between April 6, 1917, and Nov. 11, 1918, or at any time since Dec. 7, 1941, are now eligible.
This change allows 6 million veterans to qualify for American Legion programs and benefits for which they were previously not eligible.
