HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne), Sen. Lisa Baker (R-Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming ) and Sen. Marty Flynn (R-Lackawanna and Luzerne) are pleased to announce that the Wyoming Area, Wyoming Valley West and Greater Nanticoke Area school districts will be receiving $646,076, more than $1.3 million and $426,211, respectively, in grants that will be used for establishing safe, healthy and supportive learning environments in public elementary and secondary schools, and preventing and responding to acts of bullying, violence and hate in school communities.
“No child should go to school fearing for their safety,” Kaufer said. “These grants will go a long way in helping our school districts get the resources they need to ensure safe learning environments for our students.”
“Tragic events in Pennsylvania and across the nation make it imperative for us to take steps to upgrade school safety and security, for students and professionals,” Baker said. “This becomes a particular challenge for smaller districts, when they must keep up with changes in curricula, materials, technology, transportation and other cost items. These state grants are really helpful in that regard.”
“This grant underscores our commitment to creating safe and healthy learning environments for our children. It's a testament to the efforts of our community and legislative partners in prioritizing the well-being of our youth,” Flynn said. “With this funding, we aim to implement impactful initiatives that enhance safety measures and promote a positive educational experience for all. We're grateful for the support of the BSCA and look forward to continuing our work towards building safer communities for generations to come.”
This funding is awarded through the federal Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) Stronger Connections Grant (SCG). It allows high-need local education agencies to promote the social, emotional, physical and mental well-being of students and staff; address family and community engagement; and promote equitable and inclusive policies and practices.
